“ Learning spaces should inspire creativity and provoke thought, with every corner serving as a teacher. ”

— Loris Malaguzzi

Fanghe Experimental High School in Taipei has spent the past seven years evolving from a traditional junior high into an exploratory, interdisciplinary learning environment. While many campus spaces have been reimagined to reflect this shift, the central foyer—though used daily by students and staff—remained untouched. As education moves toward openness, collaboration, and self-directed learning, and as the school grows more connected to its community, the need for a more vibrant, inclusive, and meaningful space became clear. The foyer, bridging vertical and horizontal paths across campus, is both a physical and symbolic hub. Renovating it became a way to embody the school’s values and future direction. This design isn’t just about aesthetics—it invites interaction, nurtures curiosity, and sparks reflection. It turns everyday movement into moments of learning, shaping a more thoughtful and connected educational experience.

Boundary Redefined—
By redefining its boundaries, the space now feels deeper, more open, and more connected to the city—reflecting the school’s emphasis on urban exploration. What was once a top-down message board corridor has become a shared space for learning and dialogue. Now, at different times of day, students and teachers take ownership of the space—curating exhibitions, creating displays, and using it flexibly to express different themes. The foyer has become an adaptable platform for creativity and exchange.

Core as Catalyst—
By redefining boundaries and using a circular form to anchor the center of the space, the design transforms the foyer from a mere passageway into a social hub. Combined with the visual presence of the spiral staircase, the new layout encourages gathering, interaction, and a sense of belonging—fostering open and fluid connections throughout the campus.Beyond shaping atmosphere, the entrance doors serve more than just access control. When opened, they double as temporary storage for deliveries—a subtle detail where form quietly follows function.

Learning Through Play—
Beneath the staircase, recycled EPDM rubber is shaped into a playful landscape that blurs the line between playground and art installation. The color gradient—red, yellow, and grey in a 2:1:1 ratio—was carefully curated: red draws the eye; yellow recalls the original underside of the spiral stair; and grey serves as a balancing tone that softens the contrast of light and shadow. What was once a transitional corridor has now become a space for pause, play, and social interaction.
