Between Guangfu South Road and Zhongxiao East Road, a former railway corridor was once repurposed as a surface parking lot. Following its relocation underground, the site was gradually returned to the city as a linear green belt and pedestrian promenade.
Located on the second floor, the clinic overlooks this urban landscape through a continuous horizontal window in the waiting area. The sill aligns almost precisely with the surrounding tree canopy. As branches sway in the wind, shifting shadows and fragments of light occasionally enter the interior, as if the trees themselves were slowly extending into the building. The image recalls a familiar experience: lying on the ground and looking upward through layers of leaves. Light passes through countless gaps, filtered and softened until only a quiet, diffused brightness remains.
The project began with this memory.

Ceiling study model
The existing spatial conditions, however, presented a different reality. Beneath the beams, the clear ceiling height measured only 2.15 meters. A dense network of suspended services further compressed the space, reinforcing a sense of visual heaviness and constraint. Rather than concealing these limitations, the design sought to reorganize them. The ceiling was lifted to the maximum height permitted by the structural framework. Narrow gaps were carefully retained, allowing light to enter and trace the geometry of the space. Elements that once contributed to a feeling of compression were transformed into surfaces that receive, reflect, and extend light. As illumination gradually emerges from these openings, the space appears to continue beyond the physical boundary of the ceiling. The perception of height no longer relies solely on dimension, but on the possibility suggested by light itself.
What was once an uneasy condition becomes the project’s defining characteristic.
Much like sunlight passing through a canopy, its presence is not diminished through filtering. It becomes more perceptible because of it.
