When warmth, brightness, and domestic comfort have become almost unquestioned ideals of home, the homeowner and designer shared a different understanding: not to begin from those assumptions.
This was not an act of resistance, but a matter of preference.
Designed for three generations living together, the project became an opportunity to reconsider familiar expectations—what a home should look like, how comfort might be defined, and how different generations could coexist within a shared environment.
As color was gradually reduced, the spatial composition became more legible. Rather than making the interior feel heavy, darker tones allowed light to be perceived with greater subtlety. Material textures, the character of stone surfaces, and the traces of everyday life emerged more clearly against a restrained backdrop. Grey and black form the primary language of the interior. Slight variations between different stone finishes, shifts in texture and reflectivity, and the changing presence of light throughout the day create a layered yet quiet atmosphere. Richness is found not through contrast, but through nuance.
Over time, occupants tend to forget that the home is defined by a dark palette. What remains is a sense of calm certainty.
Like a room after dusk—
never particularly bright, yet somewhere one instinctively chooses to stay.
